Word of the Day: Lorem Ipsum

Starting today, I would be posting here in my blog words that I [we] stumble upon in everyday life. Some of us maybe already familiar with them, while some are not. Some may have already encountered and used them, the others, otherwise. Words that may be quizzical, trivial, radical, out-of-this-world, or typical words that captured my attention would definitely get into this list.

To start off, I would like to present to you this [these] words or phrase rather:

If you are into blogging and you are doing some tweaking and tinkering of the designs and templates for your blog but cannot manage to because of those hard-to-decipher HTML/XML files, you might  already have searched thru Google.com some ready-made, customized, copy-then-paste template formats [just like this one]. Then, you might also have encountered our friends LOREM and IPSUM, and wondered, why are they always present in every template?

At first, I thought it as some messages from my relatives (I'm a demigod, remember?) and then I tried researching for it and everyone was saying "it was too Greek-ish!", which means that they really don't understand it or know what the real meaning of it is.

Well, according to Cecil of Straight Dope, and I quote, "Lorem ipsum is the same deal--one of those inscrutable phrases that just keeps turning up. Surely it means something. Surely it's invested with, you know, mysto power. Lorem ipsum, my children. So mote it be." unquote and I didn't get it! *grins*

For that matter, I also consulted Eco Rubber Solutions, where they said that "Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum." So, thanks to Aldus for making it clear-er.

Actually, the term Lorem Ipsum really was derived from the original texts of Cicero about ethics in 45BC, which reads "Neque porro quisquam est qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet, consectetur, adipisci velit . . ." , which means "There is no one who loves pain itself, who seeks after it and wants to have it, simply because it is pain . . ."

Cicero (45 BC), the father of Lorem and Ipsum
Honestly, searching for the meaning of Lorem Ipsum is really painful, eh? :))
